The sorta vibe of like “Hey you’re wearing what I’m wearing. Twins.”
The loyalty and connection people have with their favourite brands
I have a little note in my notes app dedicated to my and my friends favourite brands. There's always the sort of wish to have a closet full of certain brands, like i used to wear only Ralph Lauren shirts and Lacoste sweaters, my flatmate has a closet full of Louis Vuitton, my family’s attic is full of Fendi and Coach, etc
Making friends via seeing people in your teams merch (Like i did with 3 of my campus friends and even one of my teachers)
My first few days here I met 3 different people here where I connected with them via the fact that we were both wearing merch from the same sport and we connected over that. I even connected with one of my teachers who noticed a jacket for a team I was wearing and remarked that that was his favourite team.
There's the idea of surrounding yourself with things and people that connect with your likes. Like my room and my flatmates room are full of our favourite team’s merch and we watch the sport together every weekend.
The dopamine rush that comes with making purchases
I’m guilty of this of course but I get a lot of joy from shopping, even just window shopping. I can spend hours doing it. One of my favourite past times is walking down 5th ave or going to soho and just running around the stores there.
My grandmother and grandfather used to fly out to Paris every week or two and then back home again just to go clothes shopping.
The quality of luxury goods and how the elite mentality of owning some draws in people
A lot of the draw of luxury is the idea that you own something particularly special or worth a lot. Like my best friend told me she’d always been a fan of Louboutins, and was obsessed with the So Kate red bottoms because she associated them with the upperclass/luxury lady aesthetic, but never owned any because of their exclusivity and price so I went and bought her a pair the next day and sent them to her. Sorta again back to the whole brand loyalty thing, where there's lots of folks that want certain luxury brands because they idolise the brand and/or associate it with a certain vibe or character that they want to embody.
There's the whole “i deserve nice things” mentality, where you want to have things that make you feel powerful to own. Like a cool car, or a luxury bag, or whatever you want. Just the want to have status, or to feel elevated and like you’re living “your best life”.
The idolisation of people and brands and the want to follow their footsteps and wear what they do
This is a little bit speaking from my own perspective but I remember seeing an athlete I love wear this specific sweater from Céline, so I went and bought it because I thought it looked good. (I then later realised i actually bought the wrong version of the sweater so I gotta go back and buy the right one too)
This is also, in part, related to my little Kate Moss poster, i have various photos of my favourite models and runways pasted around my room because I find them inspiring and sometimes will use their outfits or runways as inspiration for my outfits of the day, or potential clothes i want to make in the future. (I also just love the vibe of early 2000’s Heroin Chic grungy modelling with all the drama and toxicity and controversy that went on and how raw and exposing everything was. Especially those little magazines with all the “capture titles” of various controversies and dark secrets on the front page. The whole “Cocaine Kate” or “Kate Mess” thing. Love those.)
